  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-07-23. Revised by … Allusion IRHB comments According to W.C. Lefroy, who cites John Richard Walbran as his source, Walter Scott wrote these lines as an inscription for an arch which was to be built over Robin Hood's Well in the Fountains Abbey grounds. During a visit he was so fascinated with the story of Robin Hood's fight with, and subsequent ducking in the Skell by, the Curtal Friar within the abbey grounds close to the well that he suggested to Elizabeth Sophia Lawrence, the owner of the abbey grounds and ruins, that a cover or house be built over the well. This was done, but apparently without the inscription. Walbran (1817-69), among whose papers this story and the lines attributed to Scott are found, was a leading 19th century authority on Fountains Abbey, and the story may be true, but it is not mentioned in any of Scott's letters or by his chief biographer. • Bowstones a.k.a. Robin Hood's Bow Stones, Lyme Handley By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-20. Revised by … Cheshire Plain, the City of Manchester and the Peak District, were known as Robin Hood's Stones, Bow Stones and Picking Stones in 1810. William Marriott noted these folk names (see Allusions below) in the course of an extensive discussion of these and other stones he believed to be related. He generally used their more common name 'Bow Stones' (now usually spelt 'Bowstones'). The stones originally formed the shafts of an Anglian cross, the western being 1.22 metres high, tapering from a diameter of c. 40 cm at the base to c. 27 cm at the top, the eastern being 98 cm high and c. 40 cm in diameter. The stones have interlaced carvings in a style indicating a date no later than the 10th century. It has been suggested that they were moved to their present location and fitted …

  • Hood Street By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-04. Revised by … Hood Street is a short, roughly L-shaped road off Woodhead Road. A house on Hood Street was called Robin Hood House, and in the immediate vicinity is found another small road named Robin Hood Hill. Places named after Robin Hood hardly ever omit the outlaw's first name, so most likely the name Hood Street is not related to the outlaw, but presumably it inspired the names Robin Hood House and Robin Hood Hill. The name is indicated on Google Earth; it is probably of modern date. Beacon Howes about 350 m west of the road were known as Robin Hood's Butts as early as 1682, but by 1828 this name had been transferred to three mounds lying 1.4 km to the north-west on Stoupe … antiquarian interests who knew that the nearby Beacon Howes had once been named after the outlaw thought this fact should be commemorated in the name of this little road.
