Robin Hood's Well.
Somewhere behind these trees and bushes was a well named after Robin Hood (photo from Google Earth Street View.)

A well c. 750 m NNE of Brompton on Swale, on the east side of Gatherley Road, was formerly known as Robin Hood's Well. It is indicated on the 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1857, based on surveying done in 1854.[1] I have not found the locality indicated on later 6" O.S. maps (for which see Maps section below). The 1857 map also shows a hamlet named Robin Hood, c. 180 m SSE of the well, also on the east side of Gatherley Road.[2] The latter was formerly a stretch of the Great North, and right here it was, intriguingly, called Watling Street, just like the stretch of the road passing through Barnsdale.
