  • Short introduction We hope that this wiki will in due course come to live up to its somewhat grand name. It is called 'International' because in addition to the vast amount of material that exists in English, we intend to add information about materials in other languages such as translations of ballads, secondary literature, children's fiction, literature on foreign analogues of Robin Hood etc. Arguably 'Bibliography' is a misnomer as the site already includes a wealth of all sorts of information one would not normally expect to find in a bibliography, but the bibliographical aspect is in all cases taken quite seriously, and there is already a wiki named the Robin Hood Wiki, so another name had to be found for the site. Latest news NEW subsite: IRHB Editions, currently with a single edition: A Gest of Robyn Hode ⁃ 2024-03-12: All tithe awards for the following English counties have now been searched for Robin Hood-related place names: …

  • Site of Little John's Cave. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-07-10. Revised by … Little John's Cave which was located very near Little John's Well on the NE side of Doncaster Road (A638), 1.3 km NW of Hampole, a little west of Barnsdale, has been filled in, and the well structure is derelict. The name is first recorded in an 1838 MS Tithe Award where it appears as "Little John's Cave & Well". Smith, Albert Hugh 1961a, pt. II, p. 44. I have not found this in the 1838 tithe award for Hampole online at the Genealogist, Piece 43, sub-piece 190, Image 288-90 (£), but it is probably incomplete as it runs to only three pages. The locality is very close to Hazel Lane Quarry, an active limestone quarry. Gazetteers ⁃ Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 308 (s.n. 'Little John's Well'). MS Sources ⁃ 1838 Tithe Award; cf. • German publisher of postcards. Metro Postcard lists the company as "St.&Co.D.", locating it in Dresden, Saxony. The logo on the company's postcards is a triangular frame around "St&C o " above "D". This has sometimes been misinterpreted as "St.D & Co.". On the assumption that the "D" stands for "Dresden", the company is here listed as "Stengel and Co", while the form used in bibliographical entries of its postcards is "St. & Co." • The exact location of Robin Hood's Close is not known, but it was near St Ann's Well, formerly known as Robin Hood's Well. I have put the Close close to the Well. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-10-15. Revised by … Robin Hood's Acre, mentioned in the Nottingham civic records for 1624/25 (see record cited below), was probably located near Robin Hood's Well. Stevenson, William Henry 1882a, vol. IV, p. 441. I do not know where the Acre was located; the coordinates cited above put it quite close to Robin Hood's Well, but the exact spot I have chosen has nothing specific to recommend it. It is just that coordinates must be provided for this place-name to be indicated on the Google maps on the overview pages for Nottinghamhire and England. • Hockley (now NE Nottingham), where the Robin Hood was located. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-10-14. Revised by … The Robin Hood in Hockley is included on a list of alehouse keepers' recognizances from 1761 (see record cited below). In similar entries from 1759 and 1762 it is referred to as the Green Man. A couple of other pubs on these lists also appear under two different names. In the case of the Robin Hood/Green Man, the vacillation is almost certainly due to its signboard allowing both interpretations and the name being set down in the record by someone other than the pub owner. I do not find it very likely that the proprietor should deliberately have changed the pub's name from the Green Man to Robin Hood between 1759 and 1761, only to change it back again already in 1762. On the other hand, Robin Hood and the Green Man may very well have looked similar enough on inn signs to lead to confusion. Other Green Men are known to have morphed into Robin Hoods. • Albyn Road, where there was a Robin Hood pub in the last half of the 19th century. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-05-21. Revised by … The Robin Hood on the street now named Albyn Road in Deptford is in evidence from 1861 to 1891. The original address was 15 Garden Row. This street name was in use by 1871 and still in 1881, but by 1891 the street had been renamed St Johns Road, which was already the name of a stretch of the same road immediately to the south. Sometime after 1938 the street was again renamed, this time to Albyn Road, a name it still retains. See Pub Wiki: Robin Hood, 15 Garden Row, St Paul, Deptford; London Pubology: Robin Hood; maps listed below. Two public houses are indicated on the maps on the stretch of road in question. One, though unlabelled on the maps, is easily identified as the still existing Prince Alfred at 44 Albyn Road, on the corner of Albyn Road and Oscar (formerly Francis) Street. • Little John's Well. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-07-10. Revised by … Photo: Gerald England The now derelict Little John's Well is located on the NE side of Doncaster Road (A638), 1.3 km NW of Hampole, a little west of Barnsdale. The name is first recorded in an 1838 MS Tithe Award where it appears as "Little John's Cave & Well", while on an 1841 Ordnance Survey map the locality is indicated as "Lt. John's Well" Smith, Albert Hugh 1961a, pt. II, p. 44. The tithe award is not that for Hampole, online at the Genealogist, Piece 43, sub-piece 190, Image 288-90 (£), which is dated 1838 and appears to be complete though running to three pages only. IRHB has not found any reference to Little John's Well in the tithe awards for neighbouring townships online at The Genealogist. Evidently the tithe award in question is not at the National Archives. The well water used to fill a stone trough that had the name "Little John's Well" incised on the front. What remains of the masonry at …

Revised by … A public house named the Robin Hood in Robin Hood Court, on the west side of Shoe Lane, is referred to as early as 1692, when it figures in the summary of a case at the Old Bailey. See Records below. Information on publicans gleaned from trade directories etc. from the period 1839–75 can be found at Pub History. Pub History: Robin Hood, 5 Robin Hood Court, Shoe Lane, Holborn. Also see Sources below. When one comes across references in the records, for instance Old Bailey case reports such as those listed below, to pubs named the Robin Hood in Holborn it is sometimes difficult to determine which is meant, for there were three Robin Hood pubs in Holborn: Robin Hood (High Holborn), Robin Hood (Holborn), Robin Hood (Leather Lane, Holborn). The one we are concerned with on this page is often identified in the records by reference to the street on which it was located. Its address was 5 Robin Hood Court, Shoe Lane. …

  • Robin Hood Cottage. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-08-29. Revised by … 'Robin Hood Cottage' is a holiday home for rent Cumbrian Cottages: Robin Hood Cottage. situated in a vicinity known as 'Robin Hood' c. 2 km NE of Bassenthwaite Lake and some 600 m NNW of Bassenthwaite village. It is possible that the name 'Robin Hood', included on the 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1867 as well as subsequent revisions (see Maps section below), was originally used of the cottage and subsequently came to be applied to the vicinity in which it is located, but it may also have originated as the name for the adjacent Robin Hood Farm or the whole vicinity. The name 'Robin Hood Cottage' seems to have arisen more recently, probably some time in the second half of the 20th century, judging by the look of the sign in the driveway that reads 'Robin Hood House and Cottage' (see the second image in the Image Gallery below). The cottage is sometimes – incorrectly, I believe – referred …

  • The Robin Hood was somewhere on Kensal Road. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-01-17. Revised by … There was a pub known variously as the Robin Hood and the Robin Hood & Little John on Kensal Street, North Kensington, from at least 1847 to 1944. Pub History lists the house number as 33, Pub History: Robin Hood & Little John, 33 Kensal Road, North Kensington W10; references to Pub History are to this page unless otherwise stated. but the sources available at The Genealogist suggest that during the time house numbers – rather than names of houses – have been used for purposes of identification, there have not been numbers as low as 33 on Kensal Street. The pub is listed in the 1851 census as "The Robinhood", with Giles Dickens as publican, under the house name Wards Cottage. The Genealogist: London 1851, Piece 01466, Image 00725 (£). • Approximate indication of the site of Robin Hood's Well. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-08-26. Revised by … Robin Hood's Well is indicated on a 6" O.S. map of the Askerton–Bewcastle area published in 1868, based on surveying done in 1863. It is included on later revisions of the map at least until 1952 (see Maps section below). A writer in 2016 noted that a locality in the vicinity named the Butt is "[a]lso known as 'Robin Hood's Butt' (a possible reference to Robin Hood's Well nearby)", Geograph: The Butt near Gillalees Beacon (by Andrew Curtis). a phrasing which seems to suggest that the name 'Robin Hood's Well' is in current use. Revised by … One of the chambers of Robin Hood's Cave in Creswell Crags has been known as 'Robin Hood's Parlour' since the first half of the 18th century if not before. According to the 1841 Allusion cited below, the main chamber of Robin Hood's Cave has openings and passages into 'several other extensive rooms, which, with the rustics in the vicinity, have from generation to generation borne the names of Robin Hood's Pantry, parlour, chamber, etc.' In a paper dating from 1877, John Magens Mello, an early excacator of Robin Hood's Cave, discusses Robin Hood's Parlour, referring to it as 'C' on a his figure with a plan and sections of the cave. • The pointer indicates an area said to be the last remnant of Oxmantown Green, on which there once was a hillock named Little John's Shot. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-06-02. Revised by … Little John's Shot was a hillock on Oxmantown Green, from which, according to a tale or tradition reported in the first edition of Holinshed's Chronicles (1577), Little John shot an arrow, standing on Father Mathew Bridge, then known as Dublin Bridge (see 1577 Allusion below). The chronicle reports that Little John went to Ireland after Robin Hood's death and stayed in Dublin for a few days. Eager for a demonstration of the visitor's prowess with the longbow, the Dubliners "requested hym hartily to trie how far he could shoote at randone [sic]". Little John obliged, the arrow landing at "that mole hill, leauyng behynde him a monument, rather by his posteritie to be woondered, then possibly by any man liuyng to be counterscored". Unfortunately this feat led to the authorities becoming …

  • Kenbury Street had a Robin Hood pub at No. 49. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-05-03. Revised by … The Robin Hood in Newbury Street, Camberwell, London, was in business by 1853 and until 1961 if not later. It was also known as 'Robin Hood and Little John'. Pub History Provides a good deal of licensee information for the years 1853-1944, noting that by 1919, the name cited in the directories and records tends to be 'Robin Hood and Little John'. It also notes '[a]ddress change about 1905 to 49 Kenbury Street from 49 Denmark Street'. Pub History: Robin Hood, 49 Kenbury Street, Camberwell SE5; supplemented by London Pubology: Robin Hood and Little John While the latter is not incorrect, it is likely to mislead. The pub did not move. As suggested by a couple of the records cited at Pub History and as can be seen in those of the maps listed below dating from the 19th century, the present Kenbury Street was then named Denmark Street. The change of name may have been decided to avoid …

  • Approximate indication of the site of the southernmost tollgate, near which Robin Hood's Tree would have been located. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … According to local tradition, Robin Hood, standing on the mound on Limlow Hill just south of Litlington village, east of the road to Royston, shot an arrow that fell near the Old North Road, c. 2.5 km away near where the tollgate used to stand, at a spot formerly marked by an old thorn bush. I think the latter was identical with the Robin Hood's Tree mentioned in the 1811 Allusion cited below. According to the second Quotation below, the tollgate in the village of Kneesworth is first mentioned in 1714, and there was another tollgate c. 1 km south which has been suggested as an alternative location. A variant of the tradition has the arrow landing in Litlington Chalk Pit c. 700 metres W. of Limlow Hill. Robin Hood's prodigious shot is supposed to have been commemorated in the name of the Robin Hood & Little …

  • Site of the. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-01-21. Revised by … The Robin Hood or Robin Hood and Little John in Leather Lane existed from at least 1767 to 1910. The street number seems to have varied. First the pub was at No. 8, then 9 and by 1895 No. 10 Leather Lane. Pub History: Robin Hood, 9 Leather Lane, Holborn. In 1786, the pub was located on the east side of the lane, for asked about its location in relation to Robin Hood Yard, which was on that side of the lane, a party to a case at the Old Bailey said that it "joins the yard". Information on publicans gleaned from trade directories etc. from the period 1767–1910 can be found at Pub History (see Sources section below). There were three Robin Hood pubs in Holborn: Robin Hood (High Holborn), Robin Hood (Holborn), Robin Hood (Leather Lane, Holborn). When one comes across references to one or other of them in records, for instance Old Bailey case reports such as those listed below, it can be difficult to determine …

  • Robin Wood's Rock. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-05-09. Revised by … Robin Wood's Rock is a whin point in the North Sea, c. 480 meters from the coast at high tide, c. 140 meters at low tide, in Beadnell Bay, Northumberland. As Dobson & Taylor note, 'Wood' was a not uncommon alternative for 'Hood' in the 17th and 18th centuries. Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 300, s.n. Robin Hood's Rock. A standard work on the coastal geography of England and Wales cites the name of this locality as 'Robin Hood's Rock'. Steers, J A 1946a, p. 454. So far the earliest is the 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1886 (see Maps section below). For other examples of 'Wood' for 'Hood', see the page on Wood for Hood. • Possible site of the land pit. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-10-22. Revised by … Robin Hood Land Pit was one of the two pits operated at the Robin Hood Iron Mine in the Forest of Dean. The mine is said to have started in 1871 and was certainly in operation by 1884, but IRHB is not aware if the land pit dates from that time. According to Wikipedia's article on the village of Coleford, the mine began operation in 1871, Wikipedia: Staunton, near Coleford, Gloucestershire. and this may well be correct though no source is cited. The mine was certainly in operation by 1884, probably by 1880, for it is shown on a 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1884, based on surveying carried out 1879-80 (see Maps below). The coordinates indicated are based on a map grid suggested by Tony Oldham. Mining History Research & Exploration: Index of mines in the Forest of Dean. IRHB has tentatively accepted this, although it is not without problems. The map grid Oldham suggests for the deep pit …

  • The site of Robin Hood's Cave, now submerged by Rutland Water. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-05-26. Revised by … At the bottom of the large reservoir known as Rutland Water lie the remnants of a medieval moated site that used to be known as Robin Hood's Cave. What is left of Barnsdale Wood is located a little to the north, while Armley Wood, now largely submerged, was located a little south of the moated site. Bernard's Hill Park, later known as Barnsdale Park, See page on Barnsdale (Exton). once covered the entire area, and it has been suggested that the moat surrounded a medieval park-keeper's lodge. See Ovens, Robert 2008a, p. 45, which refers (without page reference) to Hartley, Robert F 1983a. Also see Cox, Barrie 1994a, p. 22. • Robin Hood'S Stoop. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-09-14. Revised by … Robin Hood's Stoop on Offerton Moor is an old boundary stone which was perhaps originally part of a medieval wayside cross. According to later tradition, Robin Hood shot an arrow from the Stoop all the way to Hathersage Churchyard, about 2 km to the NE. Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 297, s.n. 'Robin Hood's Stoop'; Cameron, Kenneth 1959a, pt. I, p. 156. Similar traditions relate to Whitby Abbey (North Riding of Yorkshire) and Limlow Hill (Cambridgeshire) among others. The earliest source for this place-name found so far is the 25" O.S. map of the area published in 1880, but it seems likely it was included on earlier maps. In view of Hathersage's centuries old romance with Little John it is not as surprising as it might otherwise have seemed that Robin Hood's Stoop has an alternative name that connects it with Robin Hood's next in command. The second item in the image gallery below shows an early …

  • Robin Hood's Chair. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-10-04. Revised by … Photos and information kindly provided by Rich. Robin Hood's Chair is a rock located about 100 metres due south of Robin Hood's Hills in Kirkby Forest, not quite 3 km SSE of Kirkby in Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, an area that was once part of Sherrwood Forest. About 640 metres south-west of these two localities is Robin Hood's Cave. Some 1.25 km SSW of them, just east of Annesley, was the Robin Hood public house. The name 'Robin Hood's Chair' is first recorded on John Chapman's map of Nottinghamshire, surveyed 1774 and published 1776. Chapman, John 1776a; not seen, but cf. Gover, John Eric Bruce 1940a, p. 122. Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 302, s.n. 'Robin Hood's Hills', incorrectly refer to "Chapman and André's 1775 Map of Nottinghamshire" (their italics). • Robin Hood's Grave. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-05-11. Revised by … Robin Hood's Grave is a cairn on Crosby Ravensworth Fell. The earliest occurrence of this place-name noted in A. H. Smith's Place-Names of Westmorland is an 1859 MS Ordnance Survey name book. Smith, Albert Hugh 1967a, pt. II, p. 161; and see pt. I, p. lxvi for source reference. Dobson & Taylor refer to an O.S. map of the same year. Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 305, s.n. Robin Hood's Grave. See map at Old Maps.co.uk In fact, as may be seen from the allusion cited below, the name occurs in a slightly older source dated 1857. The Royal Commission on Historical Monuments noted in 1936 that the cairn had been "robbed of much of its stone". Lindsay, David 1936a, p. 90, item No. 50. The photo included on this page certainly shows that Robin Hood's Grave must have shrunk a good deal from the 'oblong mound, seven yards by three' mentioned in the second 1860 allusion cited below. • Maid Marian Way. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-05-05. Revised by … Planned in the years after WWII and constructed during the early 1960s, Maid Marian Way is a two-lane highway running through a central area of Nottingham. In late 1945, Nottingham city council decided that a new road was needed to handle the steadily increasing volume of traffic passing through the centre of the city. The construction of Maid Marian Way was decided against the wish of many citizens by a council that ignored the opinion of at least one expert as well as criticism from the county history society, The Thoroton Society of Nottinghamshire, which declared the project an “antiquarian calamity”. A public vote in 1946 with a turnout of little more than 7 per cent failed to stop the project. After years of heated debate and strenuous protests, construction began in 1963. Several Medieval streets and many old houses had to give way for Maid Marian Way, which within a couple of years had come to be …

  • Barnsdale between Great Easton and Bringhurst. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-08-24. Revised by … A shallow valley between Great Easton and Bringhurst – two villages in the Harborough district of south-east Leicestershire – is known as Barnsdale. First mentioned in 1505, as 'Barnesdale', the name appears as an element in two derived toponyms: 'Barnsdale strete (infra villam de Eston)' (1547) and 'Barnesdale Soke' (1548). The former "refers to the lost Roman road [...] which ran from Via Devana (Gartree Road) at a junction just south-east of Medbourne via Drayton, Great Easton, Caldecott in Rutland and King's Cliffe in Northants. to meet Ermine Street at Durobrivae (Water Newton)". The first element in the name 'Barnsdale' is a reflex of either of the OE personal names 'Beorn' or 'Beornhard'. All this from Cox, Barrie 1998a, pt. IV, p. 74. Italics in quotes as in Cox. • The site of Ivanhoe Baths. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-05-08. Revised by … Ivanhoe Baths, housed in a Neoclassical building on Station Road in Ashby-dela-Zouch, opened in 1822. The building was derelict by 1960 and demolished in 1962. In 1805, a saline spring was discovered during coal mining at Moira Colliery, c. 5 km west of Ashby. Baths and a hotel were built, but after a few years it was decided to convey the water to Ashby and establish the business there instead under the name of the Ivanhoe Baths. Wikipedia: Ashby-de-la-Zouch. The spa was designed by Robert Chaplin and built by the first Marquis of Hastings. The building had a 45 m wide collonade in front and a classical dome which let in light for the saloon and pump room. There were card rooms, a billiards room as well as private baths for ladies and gentlemen. Remarkably the mineral water for the baths was transported to Ashby by boat and horse-drawn tramway from the spring at Moira colliery. The Bath Grounds …

  • Robin Hood's Cave where the carving was found in 1896. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2022-04-30. Revised by … The Robin Hood Cave Horse is an engraving of a horse's head on a 73 mm long fragment of rib bone which was discovered in 1876 in the western chamber of Robin Hood's Cave in Creswell Crags, Derbyshire. The following year, William Boyd Dawkins described the artifact as follows:   The most important discovery of the handiwork of man is the head and fore quarters of a horse [...] incised on a smoothed and rounded fragment of rib, cut short off at one end and broken at the other. On the flat side the head is represented with the nostrils and mouth and neck carefully drawn. A series of fine oblique lines show that the animal was hog-maned. They stop at the bend of the back, which is very correctly drawn. Indeed the whole is very well done and is evidently a sketch from the life. As is usually the case, the feet are not represented.   On comparing this …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-07-28. Revised by … The Robin Hood Panto was one of the shows offered at the Brighton Aquarium according to the first of the picture postcards below. The card is undated, but one specimen is postmarked Oct. 18, 1906. Designed by acclaimed architect and pier builder Eugenius Birch (1818-84), the Brighton Aquarium opened in august 1872. Apart from the aquarium, the complex contained a reading room, restaurant and conservatory. In a couple of years a roof terrace garden, roller skating rink, smoking room and music conservatory had been added. During the 1890's the establishment hosted events such as organ recitals, lectures, concerts and plays. But there was also a good deal of light entertainment, for the acts booked during the period c. 1873-88 included comedians, singers, minstrels, magicians, acrobats, clowns, ventriloquists, puppeteers, living statuary, animal acts, swimmers, and skaters.
