'Robin Hood's Butts' is the name of two adjacent Bronze Age bowl barrows in the northern area of the Long Mynd, near Duckley Nab, c. 3 km west of All Stretton. According to Dobson & Taylor, the name was applied to "[a] group of tumuli on the edge of the Long Mynd". Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 303, s.n. Robin Hood's Butts [1]. However, while more than twenty mounds, referred to collectively as the Long Mynd Barrows, are scattered over the plateau, Wikipedia: Long Mynd. the name 'Robin Hood's Butts' seems to be quite consistently applied to only two of them. Revised by … 'Robertsmen', in primary use in sources dating from the 14th to the 17th century, and subsequently used mainly historically, as a synonym for 'robbers'. Recorded spellings include Robert(e)s men, Roberd(e)smen, Robersmen and Robert's men; rarely used in the singular (e.g. Roberdesman). As the OED notes, the first element of the word is apparently the genitive of the proper name 'Robert' (or 'Roberd'), while the last element is (of course) the common noun man. The dictionary explains 'Roberdsmen' as a term for 'marauding vagrants or outlaws' in 14th century England, noting that it has been popularly taken as alluding to Robin Hood. While it is easy to see why the latter interpretation should have arisen, this cannot very well reflect the actual etymology of the term. As the OED notes, the first element is Robert, not Robin, and two 13th century sources use the Christian name 'Robert' ('Robertus') as a designation for a robber. …

The term 'Hospitis Super Stratum' refers to the hospital that is still remembered in the place-names Normanby-by-Spital and Owmby-by-Spital, immediately south of Caenby (see Google map). The street referred to in 'Super Stratum' was Ermine Street, the present A15. The hospital was at least as old as the reign of Edward II, when one John, son of Richard de Vendeur, vicar of Thevelby, was granted land for it in nearby Hemswell and Harpswell.   Robin Hood's Well was located close to the river bed, not far from the former Robin Hood Inn. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … Joseph Hunter noted in 1819 (see Allusions) that Robin Hood's Well had, "from time immemorial", been the name of a well near River Loxley. No one now seems to know where the well was located, but it is clear from Hunter that it was found somewhere very near the river in Little Matlock. Note that though they claim the well had long been named after Robin Hood, all surviving sources to mention it were written after Thomas Halliday landscaped Cliff Rocher into the summer outing spot Little Matlock. Without access to the tithe award it is hardly possible to say more exactly where this place may have been, but it cannot have been much more than a couple of kilometers from the village of Thornton.
