  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-08-22. Revised by … I designate as proto-juvenile items that illustrate the transition from popular literature for a varied audience to children's literature proper. The items included here will be mostly prose chapbooks that I feel are slightly too late (c. 1800 or later) for the section on early prose and which seem likely to have been aimed at a juvenile audience. It is a reasonable assumption that many copies of Robin Hood's Garland were purchased for (or by) young readers, yet these belong more naturally in the section on ballads. Proto-juvenile ⁃ Anonymous 1810a. Is this 24 page item a reduced version of Robin Hood's Garland or a prose chap-book? Juvenile

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-08-22. Revised by … More than fifty editions/printings of chap-books of Robin Hood ballads are known. They often carry the title 'Robin Hood's Garland'. In case of items with other titles, one often cannot tell from the title and other bibliographical data whether it is a chapbook ballad collection or a prose-chapbook. Such doubtful items are listed separately under the heading "Ballads or prose". The first known Robin Hood's Garland dates from 1663, but this probably was not the first printing. The latest garlands, under other titles, would seem to date from the very late 19th or early 20th century, but again this is hard to determine as the titles tend not to reveal whether the contents are verse or prose. I have only inspected a handful of garlands. ⁃ Anonymous 1810a. Is this 24 page item a reduced version of Robin Hood's Garland or a prose chap-book? ⁃ M, S 1777a. ⁃⁃ M, S 1808a. Ballads

  • This is among the earliest children's books to consist of prose renderings of the ballads arranged to form a 'life' of Robin Hood. The author includes an introduction in which he touches on his motivation for writing the book. This should be of wider interest: The volume of ballads termed "Robin Hood's Garland" has been hiterto nearly the only work from which the public of the present day has derived its acquaintance ith the character now under discussion, and these it is well known from their obsolete phraseology and antiquated style are not adapted to the taste of the reading community, with whom even good poetry, to use a term in general use, is below par.   [p. ii:] What has been long wanted, as a substitute for the Garland, is the matter it contains re-modelled, amplified, and embellished, so as to give life and reality to the characters represented: and that in such a manner as neither to be too extended, and therfore voluminous and expensive; nor too much abridged, …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-02-16. Revised by … Allusion Source notes The note is undated. I have dated it c. 1661–c. 1667 because 1) Wood's Survey of the Antiquities of the City of Oxford was written 1661-66 and 2) another note pasted on to the same folio of the MS is dated: June 11 [16]67. The attribution of this note to wood is uncertain. The editor is "not certain that any part of this slip is in Wood's handwriting". Wood, Anthony 1889a, vol. II, p. 111 n. 3. IRHB comments All the ballads on the list are found in Wood's collection. Was the note a list of recent acquisitions or the Robin Hood ballads he had at the time? "R. H. and the beggar" is Robin Hood and the Beggar 1; no 17th century copy of Robin Hood and the Beggar 2 is known. Child, Francis James 1882a, vol. III, pp. 156, 158. "Renowned Robin Hood" is an alternative title for Robin Hood and Queen Katherine. See Gable, John Harris 1939a, p. 147. Child does not mention this list. It is of some …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-07-09. Revised by … Robin Hood and the Bishop of Hereford is an 18th century broadside ballad known in two versions, one in 16 stanzas, the other, more condensed, in just 11 stanzas. As Child notes, Child, Francis James 1882a, vol. III, p. 194. the Bishop of Hereford is also a character in the ballad of Robin Hood and Queen Katherine (Child 145), where he remembers how Robin Hood made him sing mass and extracted an enforced loan from him. The earliest broadside prints of this ballad are from c. 1750, while the MS containing the B version has been dated to c. 1730, a dating Child feels is uncertain. According to Chappell it was the most popular Robin Hood ballad in the mid-19th century. Chappell, William 1855a, vol. II, p. 395. Plot The Bishop of Hereford will be passing through Barnsdale. Robin Hood orders his men to kill a deer: the bishop is going to dine with him and pay exorbitantly for it. Dressed as shepherds, Robin and six of his men …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-09-02. Revised by … The ballad to which Child gave the title Erlinton exists in three versions, one of which, the C version, features Robin Hood. It is almost certainly a literary forgery. Plot Robin Hood meets a fair damsel, a tanner's daughter; they become lovers (straightaway), but soon the girl's two brothers come riding to fetch her home. A sword fight ensues in which Robin kills the elder brother but spares the younger at the girl's entreaty. The two lovers then elope to the forest. The forged C version Child reprints the C version, known as Robin Hood and the Tanner's Daughter, from the edition in 'Gutch's Robin Hood, [which was printed] from a manuscript of Mr Payne Collier, supposed to have been written about 1650'. Child, Francis James 1882a, vol. I, p. 106. As John Payne Collier had been exposed as a literary forger already in the mid-19th century, Collier's sad career is sufficiently well known to require only a reference to: …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-02-15. Revised by … Based on information from Robert Lynley. Allusion Source notes The quoted passage is part of a letter written by Edward Seymour, 1st Duke of Somerset (c. 1500–1552), in response to a letter of 21 May 1547 from Stephen Gardiner (c. 1483–1555), bishop of Winchester, 1531-55. Seymour was Lord Protector of England during the minority of his nephew, Edward VI (1547–49). IRHB comments "The people buy those foolish ballads of Jack-a-Lent. So bought they in times past pardons, and carols, and Robin Hood's tales". At this time there was certainly nothing new about the claim that tales of Robin Hood were the literature or entertainment of the foolish and ignorant. Nonetheless this allusion is significant for at least two reasons. The tales of Robin Hood were "bought", i.e. they were cheap, mass-produced literature rather than what a much later romantic age would term "folk" songs or "folk" literature. The coupling with …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-09-03. Revised by … The Bold Pedlar and Robin Hood belongs to the large group of mostly late ballads in which the outlaw and/or members of his band accost a stalwart stranger, who usually represents some trade, and engage in a fight with him. In this case the stranger turns out to be a cousin of Robin Hood's named Gamble Gold. As Child notes, this ballad is essentially a traditional version of Robin Hood Newly Revived Child, Francis James 1882a, vol. III, p. 154. and therefore, like it, preserves a distant echo of the tale of Gamelyn. Plot A pedlar with a pack on his back is accosted by Robin Hood and Little John. The latter asks him what he is carrying. The pedlar says his pack is full of suits of green silk and silken bow-strings. Little John wants half of it. The pedlar says he can have it all if he can make him yield an inch. Little John pulls out his sword, and the two fight. Taunting them, Robin says he could find a smaller man who could …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-08. Revised by … Together with the Gest of Robyn Hode and Walter Scott's Ivanhoe (1820), Howard Pyle's Merry Adventures of Robin Hood (1883) is arguably the most influential of all works of Robin Hood fiction. Inspired by renaissance traditions, directly or perhaps more likely indirectly through Scott's Ivanhoe, Pyle chose to locate the life of Robin Hood during the reign of Richard I (1189-99) rather than that of "our comely King Edward" as in the Gest, but apart from this the book follows the ballads quite closely in terms of plot and incidents. Pyle is far from the first writer to avail himself of the fact that the ballads, done into prose and arranged in proper sequence, provide a 'life of Robin Hood'. In fact the earliest English children's books on Robin Hood tended to be such prose renderings of the ballads. What distinguishes Pyle's book is especially the nostalgic tone, evident also in the author's masterly drawings. Translations …

  • Short introduction We hope that this wiki will in due course come to live up to its somewhat grand name. It is called 'International' because in addition to the vast amount of material that exists in English, we intend to add information about materials in other languages such as translations of ballads, secondary literature, children's fiction, literature on foreign analogues of Robin Hood etc. Arguably 'Bibliography' is a misnomer as the site already includes a wealth of all sorts of information one would not normally expect to find in a bibliography, but the bibliographical aspect is in all cases taken quite seriously, and there is already a wiki named the Robin Hood Wiki, so another name had to be found for the site. Latest news NEW subsite: IRHB Editions, currently with a single edition: A Gest of Robyn Hode ⁃ 2024-03-12: All tithe awards for the following English counties have now been searched for Robin Hood-related place names: …

  • Wakefield. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … Wakefield is now the centre of the large metropolitan district known as the City of Wakefield, but in the late Middle Ages it was a small town or large village. It is first mentioned in Domesday Book (1086) where it occurs as Wachefeld. Smith, Albert Hugh 1961a, pt. II, pp. 163-64. The most likely etymology is "Waca's field", where "field" means "stretch of open country". Smith Smith, op. cit. at first suggests this etymology, but then decides that "wake" probably was from OE "wacu", meaning a "watch" or "wake", and that therefore the name referred to an annual feast or festival held at Wakefield. However, there is no evidence whatsoever for such a festival in the pre-Conquest period. As the first suggestion assumes less, I think it should be adopted. The Pinder of Wakefield Perhaps Wakefield's most famous citizen during the early modern period was the legendary Pinder, George à Greene, the hero of the ballad of …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-01-27. Revised by … The plot of Philip Lindsay's historical novel The Nutbrown Maid combines that of the ballad of the same name with the story lines of a number of Robin Hood ballads. It all takes place c. 1350. According to a review in the TLS, the "characters are feverishly alive. If all lovers and parents in the fourteenth century had been so fanciful, perverse and changeable, probably no twentieth-century descendants would exist to read about them." Foss, Arthur A 1939a. • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-07-12. Revised by … Fulk Fitz-Warin III (c. 1160-1258) was a Marcher Lord and heir to Whittington Castle in Shropshire, who in 1200, when he was denied the right to inherit the castle, went into rebellion against King John. He was pardoned and reinstated as lord of Whittington in 1203. His deeds and those of his ancestors were the subject of a 13th century Anglo-Norman narrative poem that was part ancestral romance, part outlaw tale. This is lost, but a very close 13th century prose paraphrase survives. There was also an ME metrical romance which was still extant in the mid-16th century, when John Leland made excerpts from it, supplementing it, where a couple of leaves were missing, with the Anglo-Norman version. The story of Fulk's outlawry, as told in these literary sources, is not only very interesting in it own right but also has many clear, sometimes very close, parallels to the early Robin Hood ballads, especially the Gest. • Loxley. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … The village of Loxley, now a suburb of Sheffield, is first mentioned (as "Lokkeslay") in 1329. There are references also to Loxley Firth, Loxley Plain and Loxley Chase etc.; the latter still survives. See for instance 6" map Yorkshire 288 (1855; surveyed 1850-51) and the maps listed in the Maps section below. The etymology of Loxley is "Locc's forest-glade". Locc was an Old English personal name well-attested in both place-names and on coins. This is the Loxley most generally believed to be the locality connected with Robin Hood. Smith, Albert Hugh 1961a, pt. 1, pp. 225, 226; pt. VII, p. 73. Smith notes simply that "[t]his Loxley is the one associated with the Robin Hood ballads". Smith. op. cit., pt. I, p. 225. Although there must have been local traditions connecting Robin Hood with Loxley by the late 16th century, only a few late ballads associate him with the area. • Southampton, the homeport of the Petit John. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-04-22. Revised by … The Petit John was a royal ship, of a type known as a balinger or ballinger, whose homeport was Southampton. Figuring in the records from 1416 to 1423, this is the oldest vessel known to have been named 'Little John'. In his review of the work in which the records are found – they are cited below – J. R. Maddicott noted, as if this interpretation were certain, that 'the historian of popular culture may note the appearance in the accounts of a ship called the Little John, a rare and early allusion to the Robin Hood ballads'. Maddicott, John Robert 1982a. Apart from a few printed in appendixes the records are in fact inventories, not accounts, and not only can the bare mention of the name 'Little John' not be taken as an allusion to ballads, it is in fact also doubtful if the vessel was named after the traditional character, something Maddicott could hardly have failed to notice …

  • By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-07-19. Revised by … Allusion IRHB comments First brought to notice by Thomas Percy as long ago as 1765, this remains the earliest literary allusion to Robin Hood. Not only that, it is the first absolutely certain (or certainly relevant) reference of any kind we have to the famous outlaw. The above words are spoken by Sloth, who as a lazy and negligent parish priest personifies one of the seven deadly sins. He prefers "ydel tales at þe Ale" Langland. op. cit., p. 331 (Passus V, l. 403). to God's word. The allusion tells us three things about Robin Hood: ⁃ poems about him existed in 1377 ⁃ they were well-known ⁃ they were regarded as "idle tales", examples of bad (secular) taste. That an author alludes to a literary work or character does not necessarily tell us that the work or character in question was well-known in his time.
