  • Sherwood Green. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-12-31. Revised by … Sherwood Green is a residential street in the village of Robin Hood in Wakefield. A 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1947, but based on a survey carried out in 1938, shows the street under construction (see Maps section below). Before then the area belonged to the Robin Hood Colliery. Given the predilection for Robin Hood-related place-names in the area it would seem a relatively certain guess that Sherwood Green owes its name to Sherwood Forest 's connection with the outlaw. • Potovens Lane, formerly Robin Hodo Hill Lane, and perhaps yet earlier: Robin Hood Street. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-08-15. Revised by … North of the Bradford Road intersection, Potovens Lane was known as 'Robin Hood Hill Lane' in the mid-19th century. The street appears with that name attached to it on a 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1854, based on surveying carried out 1848 to 1851 (see Maps below). In subsequent maps it has its present name. Its former name was suggested by the fact that it crosses Robin Hood Hill. • Loxley Gardens. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-06-18. Revised by … Given its location on the southern outskirts of Barnsdale and the present of other probably Robin Hood-related place-names in the area, it seems likely that the name of the short residential street Loxley Gardens was inspired by Robin Hood's alias. The houses on Loxley Gardens are all of fairly recent date, so a 20th (or 21st?) century date seems likely. Both ends of teh street connect with Park Drive. Revised by … A field named 'Robin Hood' is mentioned in a 1790 entry in the Wakefield manor court rolls recording the surrender of lands in or near Northowram. The entry (see Records below) includes the names of several other pieces of land: 'the Lees in Northowram', '11 acres of land, called the Ing, Little Ing, First and Second Lower Field, Lee Wood, Lower, Middle and Upper Brow, Star Field, Robin Hood and Field Next to Robin Hood'. • Lower Robin Hood Close (2) was situated not far from the point indicated. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-08-22. Revised by … Lower Robin Hood Close (2) in Outwood figures in the records as early as 1790. Its exact location cannot be established from the information available to IRHB, but it must have been situated within an area bounded (approximately) on the north by Ledger Lane, on the east by Leeds Road (A61) as far south as the Bar Lane intersection, on the south by a line from the latter point to Wrenthorpe, on the west by Wrenthorpe Road and Potovens Lane to the intersection of the latter and Ledger Lane. The coordinate chosen for Lower Robin Hood Close (2) was picked more or less at random but so as to fall within this area and be close to Potovens Lane. See further Robin Hood Street Close (Outwood). • Marsh Gate. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-10-25. Revised by … Doncaster's long gone Robin Hood pub was located at 34 Marsh Gate. Information on publicans etc. for the years 1837 to 1911 can be found at Pub History. Pub History: Robin Hood, 34 Marsh gate, Doncaster. During the years in question there seem to have been five or six public houses in Marsh Gate. They are generally included on the O.S. maps listed below as "Inn" or "P.H." The one map that includes the names of a couple of them does not do so for the Robin Hood. Pub History: Public Houses, Inns & Taverns of Doncaster, Yorkshire lists five, incl. Robin Hood, but omitting the Falcon, which is included in 6" O.S. map Yorkshire 277 (1854; surveyed 1849-50). It is quite likely that one could establish the exact location of the Robin Hood by comparing data from censuses to the map evidence. Pending this, the coordinate used on this page is that of a point near the centre of Marsh Gate. Gazetteers ⁃ Not …

  • Robin Hood's Bush once grew here! By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-06-19. Revised by … Robin Hood's Bush is indicated on 6" O.S. maps of the area immediately NW of Scarborough published 1854 to 1910, but by 1926 or 1927 the bush had gone (see maps listed in Maps section below). A Google search on 19 June 2016 yielded not a single result for this place-name. It did, however, show that variants of the proverbial expression "to go round by Robin Hood's barn" include "to go all the way around Robin Hood's Bush". If this is not a 1960's US neologism, See the page dealing with the expression To go round by Robin Hood's barn. perhaps this variant of the expression suggested the place-name? • The former Robin Hood. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … This pub started its existence on 1 Attercliffe Road in 1825, then moved to a now lost Attercliffe street named Carlton Road, before finally at some point between 1883 and 1887 settling at 548 Attercliffe Road. Lost Pubs Project and Sheffield History: Pubs N to S - Keepers, Picture-links. It still existed in 1951. Currently the precincts are occupied by La Chambre which advertizes itself as "The top class venue for liberated adults". Such a place of course has to have a French name. On the pavement in front is a poster perhaps not inappropriately advertizing "The Most Advanced Mattress in the World", while just around the corner Artan Steel Alloys Ltd. survives to remind us of Sheffield's more glorious past.
