  • Greens Lane where the Robin Hood Inn was located. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-10-17. Revised by … "Robin Hood", no doubt the name of a pub or inn, is indicated in Greens Lane, just east of Helmshore, on the 1849 6" O.S. map of the Haslingden area. The surveying for the map was done in 1844-45. By 1891 the pub had given way to a "Chemical Works", indicated on the 1911 map as a "Soap Works". See Maps section below. There is at present a Robin Hood Inn on Holcombe Road, on the other side of Helmshore. Was the pub moved there from Greens Lane or are they entirely unrelated? • Site of the Robin Hood By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-03-19. Revised by … According to a local researcher there was formerly a pub named the Robin Hood on Church Street, just north of the Tib Street/Church Street junction, in Manchester. It was adjacent to a row of warehouses that were demolished 'years ago' (as of 2010) when a large car park was established there. Pubs of Manchester, Past & Present: Robin Hood, Church Street. The pub is not included on any of the O.S. maps listed below, but there is nothing remarkable about this as early O.S. maps tend to include relatively little detail on businesses in urban areas. • The site of the Robin Hood Brewery. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2021-01-28. Revised by … By 1930 and at least as late as 1947 there was a Robin Hood Brewery in Tottington. It was located in what is now a parking lot behind the still existing Robin Hood on Main Street. In view of its proximity to the pub, it would seem likely that the brewery was owned by the publican (or the owners of the pub). The brewery is included, as 'Robin Hood Brewery', on the 25" O.S. map of the area published in 1930, based on a survey made in 1927-28. It figures on later maps, up to 1947, as 'Brewery' tout court. • Robin Hood and Little Jack, Burtonwood By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-11. Revised by … In the mid-19th century, there was a public house named 'Robin Hood and Little Jack' on Broad Lane, about 60 meters NW of the junction of Broad and Forshaw's lanes, c. 600 m NW of Burtonwood. The pub is included on a 6" O.S. map published 1849, based on a survey carried out 1846. Judging by later maps the building had been demolished by 1891 or 1893 (see Maps below). The name is of course a play on the very common 'Robin Hood and Little John'. Perhaps the publican who decided upon this name had a son named Jack, perhaps he simply wanted an unusual name that would attract attention? • Sherwood Close, Tottington. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2021-01-28. Revised by … Sherwood Close, a residential cul-de-sac in Tottington, is a side street of Kirklees Street. Just west of it, separated from it only by a parking lot, is the Robin Hood, whose bowling green once occupied the area that is now the parking lot, and in the immediate vicinity was formerly a Robin Hood Brewery. It is hard to imagine that whoever came up with the name 'Sherwood Close' was unaware of these Robin Hood-themed names. IRHB knows the street name only from Google Earth and can therefore offer no suggestion as to the age of the street and its name, but the look of the houses on Sherwood Close seems consistent with a 20th century date. It was built at some point between 1846 and 1893. A 6" O.S. map published in 1847, based on a survey carried out 1845-46, shows no building at this location. However, it is included on O.S. maps published in 1894 and later (see Maps below). The recent photo shown below is labelled "Robin Hood Cottage, Blue Stone Lane", which is a fairly clear indication that the name is still in current use. • Kirklees Street, Tottington. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2021-01-28. Revised by … In the mid-19th century, Kirklees Street was named Sandy Lane, but by 1893 it had acquired its present name. It extends about 700 m east from Market Street, Tottington, to a locality formerly (or still?) known as Kirklees. Its connection with Robin Hood is indirect. In view of Kirklees Priory, some 40 km to the east, being the alleged scene of Robin Hood's death and the site where he is allegedly buried, it seems likely that the name 'Kirklees Street' and the name of the locality to which it led, together with those of the Robin Hood and the long-defunct Robin Hood Brewery, helped inspire that of Sherwood Close, a side street on the north side of Kirklees Street. The earliest sources for the name are the 25" and 6" O.S. maps of the area, dating from 1893 on, which are listed below. See further the page on Kirklees (Tottington).
