Since Robin Hood and his men feature as important subsidiary characters in this book – which was the first work to make Robin Hood widely known among European and North American readers – the Localities in and around Ashby-de-la-Zouch named after Ivanhoe are at least of peripheral interest. • Nottingham Castle. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-10-10. Revised by … Nottingham Castle, built by William the Conqueror, sits in a commanding position on a promontory known as "Castle Rock", with 40 m high cliffs to the south and west. During the Middle Ages it was a major royal castle and an occasional royal residence. In decline by the 16th century, the castle was largely demolished in 1649. The Duke of Newcastle later built a mansion on the site, which was burnt down by rioters in 1831 and left as a ruin. This was later rebuilt to house an art gallery and museum, which are still in use. Thus not much of the original castle survives, but enough remains to give an impression of the layout of the site. Robin Hood-related art in the form of a statue, reliefs, and a topiary, is found within the castle grounds, mainly at or near the Castle's gatehouse. While it has connections with Robin Hood, these are not really close. There are Local traditions to the effect that Robin was …

  • The site of Robin Hood Well. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … Robin Hood Well in Mawdesley was located immediately east of Blue Stone Lane, c. 50 m south of the Robin Hood Inn. The well was mentioned in a geological survey published in 1875. Hull, Edward 1875a, p. 126. Henry Taylor noted in a brief account of the well in 1899 that he was "told that a constant supply of beautiful water runs over from the top flagstone". However, some time between 1957 and 2015 it was reported "now disused and covered by a modern concrete slab. An old stone brough [read: trough] is lying nearby". Whereas Taylor "could not gather any Local traditions" relating to it in 1899, in 1957 was noted a "Local tradition that Robin Hood watered his horse here". • Robin Hood's Quoit a.k.a. Man Stone or Manstone. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-09-19. Revised by … 'Robin Hood's Quoit' is the name of a boulder in the Whitworth area (Lancashire). It is first noted in 1831. According to a Local tradition recounted by John Roby in the Second Series of his Lancashire traditions published in 1831 (see Allusions below), Also see Farrer, William 1906a, vol. V, p. 206; volume publ. 1911. Robin Hood threw this boulder all the way from his Bed on Blackstone Edge, located c. 8 km to the west. Historically the quoit marked the boundary between Wardle and Whitworth parishes. Geograph SD8917: Man Stone, on Wardle-Whitworth boundary, Lancashire, by Dr Neil Clifton An alternative and perhaps more common name for it is 'Man Stone' or 'Manstone'. From the two latter back to Robin Hood's Bow Stones. All in a days work for a High Peak archer! By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-21. Revised by … If we can believe William Marriott, author of The Antiquities of Lyme and its Vicinity (1810), at least five supposed ancient stone monuments in the High Peak were connected in early 19th century popular tradition by Robin Hood's allegedly having shot an arrow from one to another. Alternatively, perhaps the traditions in question only concerned pairs of monuments, and Marriott connected them all in order, as it were, to construct a grand unified hypothesis on the origin of High Peak stone monuments. According to Marriott, Robin Hood shot an arrow from the site of the Bow Stones near Lyme Handley to that of the Dipping Stone at Whaley Moor, …

  • Loxley. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … The village of Loxley, now a suburb of Sheffield, is first mentioned (as "Lokkeslay") in 1329. There are references also to Loxley Firth, Loxley Plain and Loxley Chase etc.; the latter still survives. See for instance 6" map Yorkshire 288 (1855; surveyed 1850-51) and the maps listed in the Maps section below. The etymology of Loxley is "Locc's forest-glade". • Chinley Churn By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-21. Revised by … According to an early 19th century tradition, Robin Hood shot an arrow from the Dipping Stone at Whaley Moor to Chinley Churn. William Marriott's account in his Antiquities of Lyme and its Vicinity, published in 1810 (see Allusions), is the only known source for this tradition. Unfortunately he was more interested in developing elaborate hypotheses about the origins of various stone monuments in Lyme Handley and its vicinity than in giving a detailed account of the popular traditions on which his speculation was largely based. On Chinley he says among other things:  Tradition states, that other stones [than the Bowstones at Whaley Moor] exist upon Chinley, a high hill opposite Whalley Moor, on the other side of the river Goyt, forming the boundary of Derbyshire, in Taylor's Pieces. But, upon searching the ground, which is covered with infinite stones, the lusi naturæ, none appeared which might safely …

  • The Dipping Stone, Whaley Moor. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-21. Revised by … In the early 19th century, there was a tradition in the High Peak to the effect that Robin Hood had shot an arrow from the Bowstones near Lyme Handley to the Dipping Stone at Whaley Moor, and from there to Chinley Churn. Wiliam Marriott discusses these traditions at length in his Antiquities of Lyme and its Vicinity, published in 1810 (see Allusions below). He notes that the folk names of 'Robin Hood's Picking Stone' and 'Robin Hood's Stone' were used of several stone monuments, but it is not entirely clear if the Dipping Stone was one of these. Situated on the crest of a shallow ridge below the southern end of Whaley Moor, just off a footpath leading from Whaley Lane to Hawkshurt Head, the Dipping Stone is the rectangular, c. 120 cm long and c. 50 to 80 cm wide base stone of a pair of Saxon crosses, dated no later than the 10th century. Similar base stones are part of the Bowstones, Robin …

  • Bowstones a.k.a. Robin Hood's Bow Stones, Lyme Handley By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-20. Revised by … The Bowstones, situated beside the old Disley–Macclesfield ridgeway, overlooking Lyme Park, the Cheshire Plain, the City of Manchester and the Peak District, were known as Robin Hood's Stones, Bow Stones and Picking Stones in 1810. William Marriott noted these folk names (see Allusions below) in the course of an extensive discussion of these and other stones he believed to be related. He generally used their more common name 'Bow Stones' (now usually spelt 'Bowstones'). The stones originally formed the shafts of an Anglian cross, the western being 1.22 metres high, tapering from a diameter of c. 40 cm at the base to c. 27 cm at the top, the eastern being 98 cm high and c. 40 cm in diameter. The stones have interlaced carvings in a style indicating a date no later than the 10th century. It has been suggested that they were moved to their present location and fitted …

  • The Wylde, Bury. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-10-16. Revised by … Record IRHB comments This is an intriguing account of an 18th century Robin Hood festival from a part of England from which little evidence survives of similar festivals during the late Medieval to early modern period. One would have liked to know how far back this festival tradition went. Barton's "from time immemorial" should not be accepted without any supporting evidence, and it is unfortunate that he does not cite any sources for his account. It is clear from his preface to the book that it was based on information gleaned from Local sources, written as well as oral. He acknowledges having made "a few extracts" from "a series of chapters upon the early history of Bury" recently published in Bury Times. Ibid., p. vii. This newspaper was begun in 1855; see Farrer, William 1906a, vol. V, p. 129. Perhaps something can be found there. Barton also does not tell us what time of the year the Robin Hood …

  • Short introduction We hope that this wiki will in due course come to live up to its somewhat grand name. It is called 'International' because in addition to the vast amount of material that exists in English, we intend to add information about materials in other languages such as translations of ballads, secondary literature, children's fiction, literature on foreign analogues of Robin Hood etc. Arguably 'Bibliography' is a misnomer as the site already includes a wealth of all sorts of information one would not normally expect to find in a bibliography, but the bibliographical aspect is in all cases taken quite seriously, and there is already a wiki named the Robin Hood Wiki, so another name had to be found for the site.
