  • Sherwood Grove, Helsby. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-06-04. Revised by … Sherwood Grove is a short residential cul-de-sac on the north side and west end of Lower Robin Hood Lane in Helsby. With a handful of street and field names in this vicinity all going back to a now demolished Robin Hood pub which was in business by 1844, there can be little doubt that Sherwood Grove and Loxley Hall are part of a Robin Hood-theme. The homes on Sherwood Grove have a late 20th to early 21st century look, so the street is probably of fairly recent construction. • Sherwood Street, By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-05-20. Revised by … Sherwood Street runs south from Church Street in Warsop. Part of it was formely named Butt Lane. Since the street owes its name to the fact that it leads to one of the remaining areas of Sherwood Forest, its name cannot in itself be said to be Robin Hood-related. Its relevance in this connection lies instead in its likely having provided the inspiration for several Robin Hood-themed street names in the vicinity. The earliest reference I have is a 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1884, but the street name may well be older. Gazetteers ⁃ Not included in Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, pp. 293-311. • The northern part of the now bi-, tri or more-sected Little John's Lane in Reading. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-11-17. Revised by … Sherwood Street in Reading most likely owes its name to the presence in the neighbourhood of several localities named after Little John. The map evidence (see Maps section below) indicates that the street came into being probably after 1883 and certainly after 1877. See Wikipedia: Eggborough power station (retrieved on 2021-08-01). north of the village of Eggborough formerly stood Sherwood Hall, a country seat first mentioned in the records in 1605. • Sherwood Forest. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … Sherwood Forest is the home of the outlaws in about half of the early tales and most later sources. The first source to put Robin Hood in Sherwood is 1401 - Anonymous - Lincoln Cathedral MS 132 (c. 1401-25) (see Allusions below). The place-name is first recorded in A.D. 955 (as "scirwuda"). The form "Sherewoode" is found 1325-1500. The most probable etymology is "wood belonging to the shire". See Gover, John Eric Bruce 1940a, p. 10; Smith, Albert Hugh 1970b, pt. II, pp. 110-11. • Sherwood House probably owes its name to the proximity to a hill named Robin Hood Butts. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2014-09-05. Revised by … Sherwood House, situated c. 3.3 km E of Bentham and c. 4.2 km W of Clapham, Craven, was in existence and so named by the mid-19th century. The name may well have been suggested by the presence of a hill or mound named Robin Hood Butts in the vicinity. Perhaps now more commonly known under the name Butt Hill, Robin Hood Butts are located less than 500 m northeast of Sherwood House. In view of this it seems likely that the latter name is at least indirectly connected with Robin Hood. Sherwood House is first recorded on a 6" O.S. map of the area published 1851, based on a survey made in 1846-47 (see Maps below). It is included (and named) in all the later maps listed below. IRHB is not sure if the name is still in use. Formerly in the West Riding of Yorkshire, the area where the hill is situated now belongs administratively to North …

  • Sherwood Close, Tottington. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2021-01-28. Revised by … Sherwood Close, a residential cul-de-sac in Tottington, is a side street of Kirklees Street. Just west of it, separated from it only by a parking lot, is the Robin Hood, whose bowling green once occupied the area that is now the parking lot, and in the immediate vicinity was formerly a Robin Hood Brewery. It is hard to imagine that whoever came up with the name 'Sherwood Close' was unaware of these Robin Hood-themed names. IRHB knows the street name only from Google Earth and can therefore offer no suggestion as to the age of the street and its name, but the look of the houses on Sherwood Close seems consistent with a 20th century date. • Sherwood Drive, Skellow. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-06-18. Not included on late 19th to early 20th century O.S. maps, this street is no doubt of 20th century date. This street name may have been inspired by the proximity to Sherwood Forest rather than the Robin Hood tradition, but it is natural to think that it inspired the more or less certainly Robin Hood-related names of two of its side streets: Maid Marion Avenue (Selston) and Friar's Close (Selston). • Sherwood Road, Sutton. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-01-18. Revised by … Very likely the name of this street and that of Robin Hood Avenue in the south of Macclesfield, a little west of Sutton, were inspired by the presence, at least as late as 1938, of (what was probably) a farmstead named 'Robinhood' in the immediate vicinity. I do not know when Sherwood Road was established, but it is not included on any of the O.S. maps listed below, the latest of which was based on surveying done in 1938 (see Maps section). Some of the houses, especially on the east side of the street, do not look recent but were probably built sometime during the second half of the 20th century. My guess is that the road (and its name) date from not long after the end of World War II. • The former (?) Robin Hood Field. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-01-21. Revised by … Robin Hood Field in Helsby is first recorded in 1844. It was named after the Robin Hood pub which was until recently located on its south-western corner, the intersection of Chester Road and Lower Robin Hood Lane. The field is listed in the 1844 tithe award for Helsby with a Henry Haspell as owner, John Lewis, Jr., as occupier, state of cultivation as 'Pasture', and an area of 6 acres, 31 roods and 9 perches ( m 2 ).
