  • The Robin Hood. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … The Robin Hood in Edwinstowe is located adjacent to Robin Hood Farm. The first record of this place-name I have found is the 6" O.S. map of the area published in 1900, based on a survey carried out in 1897 (see Maps section below). The inn is indicated there as Robin Hood Inn. However, already on the 1884 map, the word "Inn" appears next to Robin Hood Farm. The Robin Hood is still in business. The junction where the pub is situated is known as the Robin Hood Crossroads. There is a Robin Hood Avenue in the immediate vicinity. • Little John. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-02-17. Revised by … A small, sharply defined hill c. 1.3 km SSE of Markfield and c. 5 km NW of Leicester, is named Little John. From its summit there is an excellent view in all directions. The hill appears on the first (1835) 1" O.S. map of the area. Cox, Barrie 1998a, pt. VI, p. 177, and source reference p. xxvii. The earliest evidence IRHS has for the name is a 6" O.S. map of the area from 1885. The English Place-Name Society's volume on this part of Leicestershire notes that a nod to Little John of the Robin Hood legend is poss[ible]., but otherwise John is prob[ably]. a familiar name for any notable isolated physical feature, to be compared with the outcropping hill Old John, 3 3/4 miles to the north-east in Bradgate Park. • The Robin Hood, Burham By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-10-12. Revised by … The Robin Hood in Burham is located at the end of a short lane on the north side of Common Road. It has been in existence at least since 1897. Dobson & Taylor list the pub as "[a]n inn on the edge of Buckmore Park, not far from the Rochester-Maidstone road". Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 298. "Buckmore Park" is labelled "Buckmore Wood" on the O.S. maps listed below. All the maps, the earliest online published in 1897, include the pub under the name "Robin Hood & Little John", which has now been shortened to The Robin Hood, and the pub, like many of those that have survived the pub death in recent years, has become a gastropub. • Little John Street. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-03-05. Revised by … Little John Street which runs north from Great John Street to Quay Street, Manchester, is such a humble little street its name is only included on 25" O.S. maps, not the 6" maps. It is labelled 'Little John Street' on the 25" map published 1923, based on a revision carried out 1915–16. The 25" maps from c. 1893 and c. 1908 are not online. The street may be included in one or both of these. The street was in existence by 1918, when a family moved from 42 Lower Byrom Street to 15 Little John Street. National Archives: Photographs related to Elsie Holmes and Family. Since Little John Street is a side street of Great John Street, someone obviously had a sense of humour. A rather similar situation is found with John and Little John streets in Bristol. Gazetteers ⁃ Not included in Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, pp. 293-311. • The Robin Hood. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-07. Revised by … The Robin Hood is a public house in Clifton Reynes. The pub dates all the way back to 1577, but it traded under the name of Carpenters Arms until at least as late as 1830. However, by 1839 it had become the Robin Hood, sometimes the Robin Hood & Little John. The excellent Pub History site lists information on publicans etc. for the years 1839 to 1935. Pub History: Robin Hood, Church Road, Clifton Reynes, Olney, Buckinghamshire. As of 20 Oct. 2018, one entry cites the date "19 August 1958" and the year 1958 but appears among 19th cent. entries, suggesting the proper date year be 1858. To this we can add Slater's Directory for 1850 in which the pub is listed as Robin Hood and Little John, the publican a Thomas Hobbs. Slater, Isaac 1850a, p. 29 of the Buckinghamshire section. The earliest map reference known to IRHB is the 25" O.S. map of the area published in 1882 (see Maps section below). As the village of …

  • Possible site of Robin Hood's Well. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-23. Revised by … Around 1925 a well on the northern slope of Pendle Hill was referred to as 'Robin Hood's Well'. Its exact location is no longer known. The well is mentioned twice by a writer of local ramblers' guides (see Allusions below). These passages suggest that the well was situated above Ravens Holme on the northern slope of the hill, on Downham Moor or the piece of land labelled "Great Coppy" on the O.S. maps listed below.
