'Marion Crescent' was the intended name, or perhaps for a few years the actual name, of the modern Poverest Road, which is found labelled with this name on at least three large-scale O.S. maps published during the years c. 1944 – 1947. One of these shows the road as projected, two as actually existing (see Maps section below). The fairly straight Powerest Road follows the general course of a previously existing much more winding road of the same name. In view of the presence of streets with Robin Hood-related names in the immediate vicinity it seems likely that the name 'Marion Crescent' was also inspired by the Robin Hood tradition. See further the place-names listed on the page on the St Mary Cray place-name cluster.
Marion Crescent runs between Powerest and Cray Valley roads, a little northeast of an area that was once wooded and known as Robin Hood Shaw but is now full of residential streets with Robin Hood-related names. Given its proximity to these it is natural to assume that 'Marion' is Lady Marion, Maid Marian in her more refined incarnation. In the immediate vicinity of Marion Crescent we find Hood Avenue May Avenue. See further the place-names listed on the page on the St Mary Cray place-name cluster.
