Allusion

Robin Hood's Mill is the name given to a spot between Little Stainforth and Stackhouse, where a rumbling noise may be heard below the ground, doubtless caused by a subterranean waterfall, such as are not uncommon in this district.[1]

Source notes

I cite the second (1879) edition, but as the number of pages is the same for the 1879 and the first (1878) edition, very likely the passage is also found in the first edition.
