Sherwood Road, i.e. Poverest Road.

[[File:|thumb|right|500px|'Sherwood Road', i.e. Poverest Road / Google Earth Street View.]]

By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2017-12-25. Revised by Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2018-01-07.

'Sherwood Road' was the intended name, or perhaps for a few years the actual name, of the modern Poverest Road, which is found labelled with this name on at least three large-scale O.S. maps published during the years c. 1944 – 1947. One of these shows the road as projected, two as actually existing (see Maps section below). The fairly straight Powerest Road follows the general course of a previously existing much more winding road of the same name. In view of the presence of streets with Robin Hood-related names in the immediate vicinity it seems likely that the name 'Sherwood Road' was also inspired by the Robin Hood tradition. See further the place-names listed on the page on the St Mary Cray place-name cluster.
