On Chapman & André's 1777 map of Essex (see Maps section and detail of map below), the Robin Hood, a public house, is indicated just north of Brentwood by the side of a road now named Ongar Road. On a 6" O.S. map of the area based on surveying carried out in 1866, the pub is indicated as "Robin Hood", while on an O.S. 6" map based on surveying done in 1895 the pub appears as "Robin Hood & Little John" (see Maps section below). The pub is still there but is now named the Robin (the feathered kind). In the meantime it has bequeathed its former name to adjacent Robin Hood Road.

The earliest trade register reference is an alehouse recognizance dated 1828, where the licensee is listed as Benjamin Bolland. Pigot's registers for 1839 and 1840 list a James Miles as publican. A William Burr is listed as publican in various registers dated 1845, 1848, 1851, 1855, 1861 and 1862, In 1867 a Joseph White was proprietor, in 1870 and 1871 a Samuel Bridge, but in 1874, 1878, 1881, 1882, 1886, and 1890 we again find James Dodd as "Licensed Victualler" or "Inn Keeper". In 1891, 1894, 1895, 1898, 1899, 1902, 1906, 1908 and 1910 the publican was a Henry Yull. In 1911 and 1912 Frank (Alfred) Norris is listed as publican, in 1917 and 1922 Frank H. Rowe, 1925 and 1929 Robert H. Page, 1933 and 1937 James Hone.[1]
