Robin Hood's Penny Stone is a large boulder located near the centre of Midgley Moor in the Pennines less than 2 km N of Midgley. It has often been confused with [[Robin Hood's Penny Stone (Wainstalls)|Robin Hood's Penny Stone near Wainstalls]] which is about 3 km away. The first source I have found to mention it is a 6" O.S. map published 1852 but surveyed 1847-49.<ref>[http://maps.nls.uk/view/102344950#zoom=6&lat=799&lon=5854&layers=BT 6" O.S. map Yorkshire Sheet 215 (1852, surveyed 1847-49) (at NLS).]</ref> This map also has  the location of [[Robin Hood's Penny Stone (Wainstalls)|the then destroyed Robin Hood's Penny Stone (at Wainstalls)]] indicated.
