Stephen Knight in one of his many publications on Robin Hood states that "[w]here Barnsdale Forest touches the hamlet of Whitwell is nothing less than Robin Hood's Field". He prints a photo of some people picnicking "[n]ear Robin Hood's Field, Whitwell, Rutland" but does not provide an exact location or cite any source.[1] One would have liked to have a reliable reference, especially since the photo, acquired through "Lensmedia" – presumably a bureau – is used "[c]ourtesy Rutland Historical Society", and the headquarters of Rutland Historical Society are located at 96 Center Street, Rutland, Vermont.[2] The society for the study of the history of the English county is named Rutland Local History & Record Society and is an amalgamation of three similar societies none of which was named 'Rutland Historical Society'.[3] I have not found any references to this Robin Hood's Field older than Knight's book (1994),[1], which in turn seems to be the source of all later ones. The coordinates I have chosen for this alleged locality are in the general area suggested by Knight and near Barnsdale Wood, which would be the wood that can be seen in the background of the photo in his book, unless of course those trees are really somewhere in Vermont.
