Overview map

The main map on this page shows Robin Hood-related localities etc. in England, including

  • localities, landscape features, thoroughfares, public houses, associations, businesses etc. named after Robin Hood
  • localites with tangentially related names found in close proximity to localities with Robin Hood-related names (names including the elements 'Sherwood', 'Loxley' etc.)
  • localities figuring as locale or mentioned in early ballads and dramas
  • localities connected with Robin Hood in local tradition
  • (unique) Robin Hood-related artifacts such as statues, reliefs etc.

The borders of the 39 pre-1972 English counties are outlined in green.

On the map you can:

  • click or press the overlay selector (upper-right corner) to select one of these:
    • terrain map
    • 1" O.S. map (National Library of Scotland)
    • OpenStreetMap (the default)
  • zoom in by doing one of these:
    • clicking the plus sign (upper-left corner)
    • roll the mouse wheel forward
    • use the spread gesture on touch-screen devices
  • zoom out by doing one of these:
    • clicking the minus sign (upper-left corner)
    • roll the mouse wheel backward
    • use the pinch gesture on touch-screen devices
  • click or press the square button (upper-right corner) to view the map fullscreen
  • in fullscreen view, click or press the square button (upper-right corner), or press escape on your keyboard, to return to inline map view.

When one of the two other map views is displayed, you can click or press the button labelled 'Overview' to return to the Overview map.

Navigation map

If you click or press the button labelled 'Navigation', a green map of England is displayed. When you hover over a county on it, you will see the name of that county displayed in abbreviated form. If you click or press within it, you will be taken to its landing page.

Choropleths

If you click or press the button labelled 'Choropleths', you will be shown a rather more gaudy map of England. The map works as the navigation map does, but its true purpose is to present statistical data. You can read more about this on the page on place-name choropleths.
