Gable considered this "[a]bout the best modern English juvenile edition". As he was a book collector, it is possible he was mainly thinking about the illustrations. The first edition has 48 colour illustrations on plates. They are about the best I have seen. A cheap edition with only one (black and white) illustration was published during WWII.
