Rowena Avenue is one of a cluster of eleven, mainly residential, streets with Robin Hood/Ivanhoe-themed names in Kirk Sandall. As can be seen on 25" and 6" O.S. maps of the area published c. 1930, the road was then planned or under construction. It is named on the maps. In Walter Scott's Ivanhoe (1820), the lovely Lady Rowena is the ward of Cedric the Saxon, the father of Wilfred of Ivanhoe. Cedric wants her to marry Athelstane the Saxon, but she is in love with Ivanhoe, of course.
