The site of Robin Hood Siding.

By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-02-26. Revised by Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-05-31.

A Robin Hood Siding formerly existed in what is now a small wooded area on the southern side of the railroad tracks in Swinton (Clifton), c. 500 m ESE of the M60 (Manchester Outer Ring Road).

The place-name is recorded in a 25" O.S. map of the area published 1893, based on a survey carried out in 1891. It is found on maps published at least as late as 1947 (see Maps below). Although there are no longer any tracks at the sidings, the name still appears to be in use.[1] About 830 meters west of the site is a Robin Hood pub. Opposite the latter was formerly a Robin Hood Mine. Whichever of these came first may well have been the ultimate inspiration for the name of the sidings.Template:PnItemQry
