Edward Rosser, butcher, born in Coleford in 1806, was keeper of the Robin Hood Inn there according to the record of the baptism of his son William on 5 February 1832. Edward died in 1838. By 1841 his widow and their children were in the workhouse.[1]
One looks in vain in commercial directories such as Robson's for 1837, Pigot's for 1842 and Slater's for 1852 for any mention of this Robin Hood inn. It probably did not long survive the death of Edward Rosser.[2] Where in the Coleford area the inn was located is not known. A local contributor to a Forest of Dean genealogy web forum points, quite sensibly, to the area of the forest of dean where the Robin Hood Iron Mine, Marian's Brick Works and Marian's Inclosure.[3] Since it was the earliest known of the localities named after Robin Hood or his girlfriend in this vicinity, it would seem likely that it provided the inspiration for the latter place-names.Template:PnItemQry
