'Robin Hood House' seems to have been the name of a large building straddling the southeastern perimeter of an area labelled 'Robin Hood' on the 6" O.S. map published in 1867 as well as subsequent revisions (see Maps section below). This 'Robin Hood' is located c. 2 km NE of Bassenthwaite Lake and c. 0.5 km NNW of Bassenthwaite village. Within it are a house presently known as Robin Hood Cottage and Robin Hood Farm. Although people sometimes refer to the cottage as 'Robin Hood House',[1] the house must have been another building, for a sign – almost certainly of 20th century origin – in the driveway reads 'Robin Hood House and Cottage' (see the second image in the Image Gallery below). There are two houses next to Robin Hood Farm, but the driveaway in question does not lead to the farm. The only other option is, as far as I can see, the previously mentioned building at the southeast corner of the area named 'Robin Hood'. This house must have been built after 1923, but not very recently, for while it is not included on any of the 6" O.S. maps listed below, the latest of which was published in 1926 based on a 1923 revision (see Maps section), its roof seems to have several repairs (see the first photo in the Image Gallery below).

About 150 m SSE of Robin Hood is found Robin Hood Wood. For this and other Robin Hood place-names within or adjacent to the Robin Hood, see Bassenthwaite place-name cluster.
