Robin Hood Hill.

By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-08-04. Revised by Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2019-06-07.

Robin Hood Hill was, and perhaps still is, the name of a locality west of Outwood, which is c. 3 km north of Wakefield. It is first recorded in 1657.[1] A.H. Smith takes a mention of "Robinhoodstreteclose" in the Wakefield Court Rolls for 1650 as the first mention of this locality,[2] but there is no evidence this did in fact refer to Robin Hood Hill. See Robin Hood Street Close (Outwood).

Robin Hood Hill is indicated, together with Robin Hood House (located on it), on the 1854 6" O.S. map of the area as well as on later versions and revisions, where Robin Hood Bridge is also found a little NE of these two localities.[3] From Bradford Road in the south to Robin Hood Bridge in the north, the ground rises smoothly from 66 to 92 m above sea level. The 1854 map indicates that both the hill and the road on it were then named Robin Hood Hill. The 1894 map has the hill indicated, but the road is not given a name. On subsequent revisions, from 1908 on, the hill is indicated and the road is named Potovens Lane.[4] Template:PnItemQry
