III, p.200.</ref> Being a field name, it possibly refers to a strip of arable land.<ref>[http://www.oed.com/view/Entry/25366?rskey=H82zQD&result=6#eid ''OED'', ''s.n.'' butt, ''n.'' 6.]</ref>However, where the locality in question can be identified, the name "Robin Hood's Butts" usually refers to ancient mounds, which thus may well also turn out to be the type of locality concerned here.
