A close in Brailsford, located c. 750 m NE of the point at Yeldersley Lane where a road leads NE to Dam and Kismet Farms, was known as Plumpton Park in 1837.
Plumpton Park is also the name in the Gest of Robyn Hode of an area – probably near the home of the knight Sir Richard at the Lee – where King Edward discovers to his chagrin that Robin Hood has severely depleted the stock of deer. Though this latter Plumpton Park is most probably to be thought of as the locality in Lancashire, this is not entirely certain, and it seems best, therefore, to record all occurrences of the name.
The field name occurs in the tithe award for the parish of Brailsford, where the landowner is recorded as 'Ferrers', i.e. Washington Shirley, 8th Earl Ferrers (1760–1842),[1] the occupier as John Wallbank, the state of cultivation as 'Arable' and the area as 3 acres, 2 roods and 24 perches (14771.03 m2). Two other plots figure as 'Plumpton Close'.[2] See detail of O.S. map with Plumpton Park indicated in maroon in image gallery below.
