  • Short introduction We hope that this wiki will in due course come to live up to its somewhat grand name. It is called 'International' because in addition to the vast amount of material that exists in English, we intend to add information about materials in other languages such as translations of ballads, secondary literature, children's fiction, literature on foreign analogues of Robin Hood etc. Arguably 'Bibliography' is a misnomer as the site already includes a wealth of all sorts of information one would not normally expect to find in a bibliography, but the bibliographical aspect is in all cases taken quite seriously, and there is already a wiki named the Robin Hood Wiki, so another name had to be found for the site. Latest news NEW subsite: IRHB Editions, currently with a single edition: A Gest of Robyn Hode ⁃ 2024-03-12: All tithe awards for the following English counties have now been searched for Robin Hood-related place names: …

  • Site of Little John's Cave. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2013-07-10. Revised by … Little John's Cave which was located very near Little John's Well on the NE side of Doncaster Road (A638), 1.3 km NW of Hampole, a little west of Barnsdale, has been filled in, and the well structure is derelict. The name is first recorded in an 1838 MS Tithe Award where it appears as "Little John's Cave & Well". Smith, Albert Hugh 1961a, pt. II, p. 44. I have not found this in the 1838 tithe award for Hampole online at the Genealogist, Piece 43, sub-piece 190, Image 288-90 (£), but it is probably incomplete as it runs to only three pages. The locality is very close to Hazel Lane Quarry, an active limestone quarry. Gazetteers ⁃ Dobson, Richard Barrie 1976a, p. 308 (s.n. 'Little John's Well'). MS Sources ⁃ 1838 Tithe Award; cf. • German publisher of postcards. Metro Postcard lists the company as "St.&Co.D.", locating it in Dresden, Saxony. The logo on the company's postcards is a triangular frame around "St&C o " above "D". This has sometimes been misinterpreted as "St.D & Co.". On the assumption that the "D" stands for "Dresden", the company is here listed as "Stengel and Co", while the form used in bibliographical entries of its postcards is "St. & Co." • The Robin Hood, Norton. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2020-11-01. Revised by … The still thriving Robin Hood pub on the corner of Ford Green Road and Spragg House Lane in Norton, Stoke-on-Trent, was in existence by 1845. In that year a newspaper reported that two colliers had misbehaved in the pub, being 'disguised in drink'. • The exact location of Robin Hood's Close is not known, but it was near St Ann's Well, formerly known as Robin Hood's Well. I have put the Close close to the Well. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-10-15. Revised by … Robin Hood's Acre, mentioned in the Nottingham civic records for 1624/25 (see record cited below), was probably located near Robin Hood's Well. Stevenson, William Henry 1882a, vol. IV, p. 441. I do not know where the Acre was located; the coordinates cited above put it quite close to Robin Hood's Well, but the exact spot I have chosen has nothing specific to recommend it. It is just that coordinates must be provided for this place-name to be indicated on the Google maps on the overview pages for Nottinghamhire and England. • Hockley (now NE Nottingham), where the Robin Hood was located. By Henrik Thiil Nielsen, 2016-10-14. Revised by … The Robin Hood in Hockley is included on a list of alehouse keepers' recognizances from 1761 (see record cited below). In similar entries from 1759 and 1762 it is referred to as the Green Man. A couple of other pubs on these lists also appear under two different names. In the case of the Robin Hood/Green Man, the vacillation is almost certainly due to its signboard allowing both interpretations and the name being set down in the record by someone other than the pub owner. I do not find it very likely that the proprietor should deliberately have changed the pub's name from the Green Man to Robin Hood between 1759 and 1761, only to change it back again already in 1762. On the other hand, Robin Hood and the Green Man may very well have looked similar enough on inn signs to lead to confusion. Other Green Men are known to have morphed into Robin Hoods.
