Petty Sessions records from the years 1872 to 1886 provide evidence of the existence of a Robin Hood pub in Shirley Street, Canning Town.[1] The fact that the street name is given as George Street in 1874 and 1878 helps us establish the exact location of the pub. As it continued westward after intersecting with Jude Street and an unnamed short street – now part of Emily Street – Shirley Street did not as now retain its name but instead became George Street. The 25" O.S. maps indicate an unnamed public house on the corner of Shirley Street and the short unnamed street, i.e. at the point where Shirley Street changed its name to George Street. If this was the Robin Hood, it is easy to understand the vacillation between the two street names in the Petty Sessions records.
