A small triangular plot of land in Slade Hooton, Laughton-en-le-Morthen, Rotherham, was named 'Plumpton Park' c. 1840. It is one of a surprisingly large number of plots of land in the North and North Midlands recorded under that name in tithe awards. 'Plumpton Park' is of course also the name in the Gest of Robyn Hode of an area, probably near the home of the knight Sir Richard at the Lee, where King Edward notes the shortage of deer due to the activities of Robin Hood there. Though this Plumpton Park is most probably to be thought of as the locality in Lancashire, this is not entirely certain, and it is of interest, therefore, to know what other localities or areas are or were named 'Plumpton Park'.
The field name occurs in the 1839 tithe award for Laughton-en-le-Morthen, where it is listed with William Beckwith, Esq., as owner, Francis Chambers as occupier, an area of 30 perches (758.79 m2), and 'Arable' as 'State of Cultivation'.[1]
The small triangular plot can be seen on the maps listed below, for instance the 25" map published 1902, on the west side of High Hooton Road, straddling two larger fields which are numbered, respectively, 367/2•595 and 377/7•616. The plot itself is not numbered, but a look at the map makes it reasonably clear that it must have formed part of a larger field (numbered 364/28•855 on the map) before High Hooton Road was either established or, perhaps more likely, its course was altered so as to cut through the field, leaving the small triangular piece 'stranded' on its west side.
